North American Industry Classification Code (NAICS)

Modified on Sat, Dec 4, 2021 at 8:47 AM

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is used by the United States, Canada, and Mexico to classify businesses by industry.  Each business is classified into a six-digit NAICS code number based on the type of work the company typically performs.

To determine your code visit the U.S. Census Bureau Website

Use the search feature and enter a keyword that described your type of business or view the full list of codes to select from.  Choose the code that most closely corresponds to your primary business activity, or refine your search to obtain other choices.  Each industry includes an "Other" sub-category for businesses that are not clearly defined.

To view the full NAICS codes and structure select the most recent version from the list provided.  Then select the two-digit sector code to view all NAICS codes under that sector.  Then choose the six-digit code of your interest to view the corresponding definition.

For Frequently Asked Questions regarding NAICS select the "FAQs" tab at the top of the Census Burreau website https://www.census.gov/naics/
